Into the Skin by Manisha Gera Baswani
It is impossible to summarise Manisha Gera Baswani's diverse & gargantuan oeuvre in a passage. And equally impossible to comprehend the scope of her practice through this body of work here. But even though a drop may not encompass the ocean's vastness, it still represents all its elemental qualities.
Manisha’s work is informed and infused with a multitude of voices and roles, embracing various facets of womanhood and nationality- guided equally by the timeless Vedanta imbibed in her formative years, her parents’ migration recollections and her mentor’s critical eye. Through her practice, she navigates and acknowledges the precariousness of life, embracing diverse materiality & mediums, even though she's foremost a painter.
Incisions are central to this body of her work. Incisions that repair & bind, incisions that enable mending, healing or stitching, be it life, wounds or geographical fractures. The artist engages in drawing with repetitive pinhole incisions invoking timeless textile traditions in a dichotomous process that lends to creation through an act of destruction, offering the proverbial cyclical preservation of old memories imbibed through repeated recitals, alluding to oral allegorical traditions that form the backbone of our collective consciousness.
